A spectacular day trip to climb Angwin Peak

It was yet another windy day (40-50km/hr winds) in Albany so we were sat thinking of things we could do…

Google maps showed that Porongurup National Park was only 30 minutes drive from Albany and the wind was significantly lower! A day trip it was.

Climb Angwin Peak

Getting there

Angwin Peak is one of the many climbing areas in Porongurup National Park.

Porongurup national park is an easy drive from Albany. But getting to the climbing area was significantly harder. From Bolganup road turn onto Angwin Park road (a well maintained gravel road) and continue until you pass the slabs of rock adjacent to the road. Just after this is a small layby to park in. From the car walk back to the slabs and this is where the adventure starts!

It’s about a 15 minute approach, once you know the way! Give another 5-10 minutes for path finding!

Make sure to remember your carrot bolts!! We left ours in the car and it was a very irritating climb down and back to retrieve them before starting to climb!!

The Approach

Walk from road onto the slab. head directly up and when you reach the bush line there is a small path through to the right. Take this.

Continue through the bush. The path weaves a way through.

You emerged onto another steeper slab. Climb this following cairns to the top right corner. This is the hardest section to climb.

We were excited to see the rock… but this is not the one we climbed today!

From the top of the slab you are rewarded with a great view!

Turn into the small trail through more bush. The path is clear but very overgrown!

Soon you reach the lower part of another slab of rock. This time you do not emerge onto the rock but climb a sleep trail just to the left of it. At the top turn right through another bush trail.

And finally you are there! A huge slab of rock with a small cave just at the bottom. You can see bolts enticing you to climb!

This is the western face. There are further climbing areas around to the left but the path is very overgrown and the bases are in bush leaving nowhere good to belay.

Climbing Angwin Peak

It’s a great route to climb! Protected from the wind, but very exposed to the sun! Great views the whole climb!

I highly recommend Angwin Peak for a climbing adventure! It’s a great day out!!
