Options to rock climb in Western Australia are slightly limited. The best spots involves driving 3-6 hours from Perth, although there are some options closer to the city. A car is necessary to get to all climbing areas. Once there however, there are a variety of climbs and it’s not usually very busy! Routes tend to be well maintained and bolted however carrot bolts are often necessary.

Mountain Quarry is Perth is in the hills on the outskirts of Perth. Like everywhere in Perth its very easy to get to- if you have a car

Ring Parks Mundaring Office (9290 6100) to book in and get the code for the gate. You can then drive to the base of the quarry and start climbing.

Beginners. The playboy area (short climbs on your left hand side as you enter) offer great climbs to learn / help transition from indoor to outdoor climbing. Great spot to set up top rope anchors for those who can’t/ don’t want to lead climb. Plenty of other climbs for those who want something harder!

Enjoy night climbing! Easily accessible with no long walks to get back!

10 minutes drive from Mountain Quarry.

Like mountain quarry, ring Parks Mundaring Office to book in and get the code for the gate. You can then drive to the base of the quarry and start climbing. The road is usually well maintained but can be a bit rough in the winter.

You can also drive down Zig zag road and park about halfway down. Great to really enjoy the city views.

Everyone. Wide range of climbs, slightly fewer options for top rope set up.

Enjoy the views over the city

Churchman’s Brook climbing, chimney climb

40 minute drive from the centre of Perth near Armadale

No need to call anyone here! Drive to thee very end of the road to a gate and park here, Beware of the gate to the right halfway down the road.. its not this one!

From the car walk 5 minutes down the wide gravel path. Just where it rounds a corner the is a very small and overgrown path to the right. Take this and walk down- steps are built into the path and you emerge at the top of the climbing area. Best way to get to the bottom is setting up a top rope to rappel but you can walk down around if you prefer. About 15 minutes walk from the car.

Intermediate. Not many easy climbs here. Good if trad climbing or comfortable setting up top rope anchors.

Escape from the sun! Climbs are in the shade from early afternoon.

1 hour drive from Perth

Easiest way is to google map Mt Cuthbert and follow the directions! Turn left off Albany highway onto Herold road and continue left at the fork. There is a small parking area a few minutes down the road to the left large enough for 1-2 cars. From here, follow the small path across the road. It takes about 30 minutes to get to the top of Mt Cuthbert hill.

From the top continue to the next cairn. There is a very small subtle past to your right as you walk this was. The path looks like you are walking down the hill. Continue until to emerge at the climbing area-obvious for the bolts visible in the rock.

Slab climbing. Lots of fun slabs here including a few multipitch! But not much else.

A day out.

The best places to rock climb in western involve leaving the city! Bob’s hollow is the first place I really climbed outdoors so it I love it even more!

Bob’s Hollow Climbing WA

3 hours south from Perth

Park on contos road near the coast, past the campsite. (Also recommend contos campsite as a great place to camp and stay with decent facilities)

Walk due north along the cape to cape track for about 30/40 mins. It’s a very scenic and fairly flat coastal walk. The entry to the climbing area is where there is a path down to the beach. Don’t follow the path all the way but rather turn off onto a smaller path to the left. Location is pretty accurately marked on google maps.

Climbing. Climbing here is fantastic. There’s a good range of climbs, with good juggy holds. Beware the rock is very rough here.

A great day climbing by the coast.

3 hours south from Perth

Turn off caves road along Wilyaprub road and park at the car park at the end.

Climb over the turnstile and continue walking towards the coast. Follow the path and it gradually becomes more well trodden. Once you reach the coast, climbing areas are below you to both the north and south.. To walk to the bottom of the climbing turn left and follow the path down.

Coastal climbing. Great variety of climbs. A lot of the routes are trad, although there are some sport routes including some which are beginner friendly. Much more routes available if you are happy even just setting up trad anchors.

Epic coastal views. Climb while watching whales and dolphins!

Wellington Dam Climbing area

2 hours south from Perth

Drive to Wellington Dam

Easy to get to and well signposted as the Dam is a popular spot. Drive to the quarry for climbing. Free parking at the bottom.

Signs at the bottom of the dam to pay for a climbing permit. No need to book in advance.

Lead climbing. There are a few option for top rope anchor set up but generally most routes best to lead climb.

A good holiday. Excellent camping spot ( Potters Gorge campsite), some hiking and cycling routes nearby.

This is some of the best climbing in WA. Sure, a good distance from Perth, but coastal climbing is incredible. Unfortunately mainly trad climbing with little sport/top rope opportunities.

Abseiling at the Gap, Albany

5-6 hours south from Perth to Albany

The Gap car park. Plenty of parking available.

Lots of climbing sports around. You can set up an anchor and abseil right at the gap. Otherwise take the path away from the crowds and the gap and there’s an area with short climbs 5 minutes walk away.

Trad climbing.

Dramatic sea views while climbing

Climbing at monkey rock

5-6 hours south from Perth to Denmark

From South Coast highway turn onto Lights road. There’s a signposted car park on the left . You can then walk about 10 minutes along the bibbluman/sheila hill track toward Monkey rocks. .

Slab climbing.

Partially shady climbs with good views of the forest and ocean.

Climbing at Blow holes, Albany

6 hours south from Perth to Albany then along the peninsula.

Drive along Frenchman bay road turning off onto blowholes road. Continue to the car park at the end. Walk along the main path towards the blow holes viewpoint. Before you get there turn off left onto a small path towards the climbing area.

Beginner trad climbing. Short, easily accessible climbs perfect to practice setting up gear.

Ocean views.

Unfortunately, despite living in Western Australia for a year, I just didn’t have time to visit all the climbing sports! Other highly recommended spots include Kalbarri and the Stirling ranges which I sadly can’t include on this list! Kalbarri is apparently an excellent place to climb and while I can’t comment on it, everyone tells me it is well worth the drive- so you can let me know!
